The new graphics coprocessor called Acorn technology began to replace the microprocessor-based graphics coprocessor, which was running custom software called “Artistic” that had been developed and released by Alias Systems Corporation. When I began using AutoCAD in 1982, I worked at a corporation that had what was essentially a mini-laptop (RS-X). The RS-X was about the size of a piece of paper and had 128 Kb of memory. It was not much of a program, but it was one of the few programs I had ever used that ran in the early 1980s. But, the graphics coprocessor on the RS-X was so slow that it could not easily handle the demands of the program. I ended up using both programs on the same RS-X. I would run AutoCAD in the morning and then run Artistic in the afternoon. This was because Artistic was about 3 times faster than AutoCAD and allowed for working on the next set of drawing documents in a batch process. A couple of years ago, I decided to run AutoCAD on an old machine that I had just upgraded to a brand new Pentium chip (4.2 MHz). The original 2.4 MHz machine could not handle AutoCAD. I had to upgrade the machine just to get it to run the program. It was not until I ran AutoCAD on a Pentium that I realized how much it could do in comparison to the old Artistic.
